25 Years of Iconic El Gaucho Memories

For 25 years, El Gaucho Portland has been a place where unforgettable moments unfold—where guests come together to revel, celebrate, and create lasting memories. In honor of this milestone, we invited our guests to share their most cherished El Gaucho experiences as part of our Iconic Experience Contest.

The response was overwhelming. We received 120 heartfelt stories, each one a testament to the connections, celebrations, and special occasions that have made El Gaucho a part of so many lives. Choosing the winners was no easy task, but after much deliberation, we selected a grand prize winner, who will enjoy Dinner for Two and an overnight stay at the Benson. Our second-place winner receives a $200 El Gaucho gift card, and in the spirit of celebration, we awarded the top 25 entries with a $50 gift card to El Gaucho.

With their permission, we’re honored to share excerpts from these winning stories—each one a reflection of the magic that happens when great food, exceptional hospitality, and meaningful moments come together.

“My Place”

When I reflect on the tapestry of my life, certain moments shine brighter than others. Surprisingly, many of those moments share a common thread—they unfolded within the warm glow of El Gaucho Portland.

It all began the evening my fiancé, Teddy, first told me he loved me. We’d been dating for months, but Teddy, cautious and reserved from a life of giving so much to others, often found it hard to express his feelings. That night, he surprised me with reservations at El Gaucho, a place I’d always dreamed of visiting. From the moment we walked in, the timeless elegance of the restaurant wrapped around us like a comforting embrace. As the staff presented course after course of perfection, I noticed something rare—Teddy was completely at ease. Between bites of tender filet mignon and the silky decadence of the famed Bananas Foster, he looked into my eyes and said, “I’ve never felt more at home than I do with you.”

From that night on, El Gaucho became our place. It’s where we toasted to every milestone, from promotions at work to the first time we said, “Let’s build a life together.” One evening, after years of rescheduling, doubt, and life’s many curve balls, Teddy proposed to me at El Gaucho. The staff, knowing our story by then, brought out the ring hidden in a dessert. The entire restaurant erupted into applause as tears streamed down my face.

But El Gaucho wasn’t just a witness to love. It became a bridge between generations. I took my mother there for her birthday one year, treating her to a dining experience she’d never imagined growing up in the Philippines. Over her first taste of wagyu beef, she told me stories of her childhood, of sacrifices and dreams, and thanked me for sharing this piece of my life with her. That evening, as we walked out under the city lights, she held my hand like she did when I was a child.

And then there was the night I said goodbye to my brother, Gian. He’d been the cornerstone of my childhood, always lifting me up when the world felt heavy. After he passed, I wanted to honor him with a meal that celebrated life, love, and memories. My closest friends and I gathered at El Gaucho, reminiscing over the shared plates and Gian’s favorite music, which the guitarist played at my request. It was bittersweet, but in that space, surrounded by elegance and care, I felt closer to him than ever.

El Gaucho Portland isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a theater where the most beautiful scenes of my life have played out. Every visit, from the perfectly crafted cocktails to the impeccable service, felt like stepping into a sacred space, one where time slowed down and every detail mattered. It’s where love grew, family connected, and memories were made.

Some people have houses, parks, or landmarks that define their lives. For me, it’s El Gaucho Portland—a place where my most cherished chapters came to life.

“18 Years in the Making”

Eighteen years ago, I waddled into El Gaucho in Portland, seven months pregnant and ravenously hungry. It was my very first visit to this iconic steakhouse, and what unfolded that evening is a memory forever etched into my heart (and taste buds). My meal? Let’s just say it was nothing short of legendary—so much so that I sometimes wonder if it influenced the incredible young woman my baby girl came to be! LOL

Picture this: a glowing (read: round) mother-to-be, savoring El Gaucho’s signature tableside Caesar salad as though it were a gift from the heavens. Then came the wicked shrimp —each bite bursting with flavor, and next, the honey butter roasted sweet corn and a baked potato (El Gaucho-style) had me declaring I could live off sides alone. And then, the pièce de résistance: an absolutely perfect filet mignon that melted in my mouth like butter. But the crown jewel of the evening? A massive, mouthwatering lobster tail that I still refer to as my true “push present.”

That meal didn’t just satisfy my cravings—it was a celebration, a feast fit for the incredible journey I was about to embark on as a mom. And now, that baby girl I carried into El Gaucho has grown into someone truly extraordinary.

Today, Addilyn is a straight-A student, valedictorian of her graduating class,  a repeat missionary and sign language interpreter at her church. Standing tall at 6’2”, she’s the reigning Mount Hood Conference Volleyball Player of the Year, First Team All-State for all of Oregon, and headed to Cal Poly next fall on a volleyball scholarship. She is the embodiment of hard work, talent, and grace. And while her success is undoubtedly a testament to her dedication, I can also playfully wonder if the El Gaucho meal that fed us both all those years ago played a little part in her greatness. After all, that filet mignon and lobster tail surely had something to do with her strength, right?

As Addilyn prepares to leave home for her next chapter, I can think of no better way to honor her achievements than to bring things full circle. Winning this contest would allow me to gift her the dining experience of a lifetime: a senior prom dinner at El Gaucho, where she can make her own unforgettable memories—just as I did.

El Gaucho, you are more than a restaurant. You’re a part of my family’s story, and I would be so grateful to share your magic with my daughter as she takes on the world. Here’s to El Gaucho, and to the incredible people it feeds, one perfect meal at a time!

“Dance with Me”
So many fantastic memories starting with my husband’s 60th birthday party in 2014 held at your Portland location. We came to “interview” your restaurant on a whim, but the helpful staff got us totally fired up. We did the party in the bar – how cool was that- which made it even more special. There were 30 of our closest friends, great appetizers and lots of booze. Your bartender helped advance plan and even ordered in a keg of our favorite local beer. Friends flew in from as far away as Maryland. Many of us stayed at hotels downtown afterwards.  A fantastic time was had by all, and then your wonderful manager talked us into joining the Rewards Program since we’d spent so much at the party. We will always appreciate that! We had a few special dinners from all the points, including an anniversary dinner! On that night, my husband (who never dances) promised to “Dance with me when he turned 70!” and he wrote it on an El Gaucho cocktail napkin. I took that napkin and had it framed. It’s been on our wall as a reminder ever since!!

And now, since he’s 70—he has to dance with me!

We also loved coming into the city and having happy hour with your wonderful bar menu.  Now you are up in Vancouver (and so are we!) and it’s our favorite place for many occasions, great happy hours and showing off the Witness Tree! El Gaucho will always be our go-to restaurant and holds a special place in our hearts.

“Bolas”

As an Argentine transplant to the US at 4 yrs of age, my mother always had a pair of “bolas”, two leather wrapped balls on a braided chord, the gaucho’s equivalent of a lasso. They fascinated me as a little kid. So she would tell me tales of what it meant to be a gaucho, to work as a ranch hand tending the earth by day and to dance and drink by an open fire by night.

My family owned a ranch and had what they called a “chorizo” or sausage house, long and interconnected rooms with a 30 meter covered patio where family would gather for the New Year or special occasions. I was too young to remember, but I know the sweet smell of cattle on an open fire spit “al asador”.

It was there where children learned how to cut their steak and adults paid respects to the elders who taught them. Where the young thought they were immune to time and the elders longed for what once had been.

When I enter El Gaucho, I am taken back there. Time slows down. I can smell that open fire. Flames dancing under the stars. Friends and family laughing with purple teeth over a good Malbec. The fresh air lifting, for a moment, our worries and sorrows and taking lighter hearts with it. There is no equal to the smell of a good steak, a premium cigar, or those things in life we savor but are told are only good in moderation.

For many years, my abuela (now 7,000 miles from home) had the chorizo house’s 40 lb dinner bell taking up half her closet. It was a reminder to treasure these spaces where we share common walls, where we honor the fruits of our labor, where we raise a glass with loved ones past and loved ones present.

“Toast to Son”

El Gaucho Portland was the place we’d go for Every. Single. Special. Occasion! When we lived in Portland for six years. I hosted many team holiday dinners there as well.

Our experiences were always fantastic, but our most memorable experience was our dinner shortly after the death of our son.
The entire team went out of their way to ensure we had a very special evening. There were lots of tears, tender, kind words of support from everyone, and they each brought us a celebratory glass of bubbles to toast to our son’s well-lived life.

That evening will forever be my favorite, although so, so sad, it was also incredibly special.

We now live in Seattle and look forward to when we can visit Portland and dine at our favorite restaurant again. ♥️ We do like the Seattle location, but Portland is truly our absolute favorite!

Cheers to 25 more years!

“21st Wedding Anniversary”

My wife and I have been coming to El Gaucho for quite a few years and decided to spend our 20-year wedding anniversary there in 2023. It was an amazing experience as it always is, we left there extremely satisfied and as always feeling like we were spoiled. We came back the following year for our 21st wedding anniversary and we noticed that the menu said “happy 21st wedding anniversary “ at the top. We were in awe and a little disappointed as we realized that it was probably on another menu the previous year, our 20th anniversary and we would’ve loved to have a copy of them for a keepsake. We said something to our waiter, and he came back later with 2 rolled up menus tied with a ribbon that said “happy 20th anniversary “ on the top. My wife was so happy that she cried with joyous tears. That’s our best memory at El Gaucho and is one of the many reasons we continue to come back. So, thank you for all you continue to do for us each time we come back!

“Big Bottle Club”

This goes all the way back to 2001 when we had a group called the Big Bottle Club where we started our tradition of different restaurants each quarter, with a minimum start of a 6-liter bottle of wine. Of course we started at El Gaucho, because one of our original members was your first General Manager Rich Troiani, along with Scott Weaver, the Exec. Chef with Elephants and Phil Mosley from Phil’s meat market. After dinner we went to the cigar room and a few of the LA Lakers were there including Shaq and coach Phil Jackson and proceeded to have a 30-minute conversation with him about Zen and Basketball. Unforgettable night and always amazing experiences at El Gaucho. Thank you!

“Dessert First”

El Gaucho on Christmas Eve has been our tradition since 2013. My husband Pat proposed to me on Christmas Eve 2012 in front of Portland’s Christmas Tree. Every year since then, with the exception of 2020, our tradition is to go downtown on Christmas Eve, stay at the Benson, shop, take a selfie in front of the tree, enjoy dinner and wine at our favorite restaurant (obviously, El Gaucho Portland) and then we sit in the cigar room while Pat gets to enjoy his traditional Christmas Eve cigar and I enjoy some more wine. It is such a tradition! Not only for us, but we love seeing some of the same families, year after year… And we’ve now learned the secret to enjoying Bananas Foster…if you get super full from the amazing dinner, have dessert first! You can always take dinner leftovers home, but you can’t take the Bananas Foster with you. It’s also so fun to meet new people in the cigar lounge. It usually starts out slow–everyone enjoying their own celebration/cigars, but then by the end of the night, everyone is watching football together and the room is bustling with energy! We also love seeing some of our favorite staff members year after year…that’s how you know it truly is a special place! Thank you, El Gaucho Portland, for being our Christmas Eve tradition for the past 12 years. We’re already looking forward to our bar booth on December 24, 2025 followed by the cigar lounge! Cheers!

“The Gaucho Kingdom”

In a magical place far away, there exists a fantasy utopian world. It’s the place where dreams come true and only beauty exists. Many years ago, a boy wandered in thru the doors of this magnificent Camelot. A wonderful gentleman named Sherwood welcomed him with pleasantry and love. What grew from this small seed was a relationship built on joy, happiness and love! Over the years the boy found a place that fulfilled his every desire. He was made to feel like part of the family. He grew to love each and every moment and friendship that came from this utopia. As time passed, he introduced many of his friends and acquaintances to the kingdom of El Gaucho. They too found peace and solace within these magical gates. As many moons passed, these relationships and experiences continued to elevate his life and that of his friends. Every visit was unique and created memories that would last forever. Food so decadent and exquisite that it often brought tears. Each dish was made from love and crafted by Artisans. Music flowed and beverages were consumed. Special requests were honored. Every visit to this Gaucho kingdom brought only more joy and love. No longer was the boy merely just a visitor. He made this place his home and was part of the family. No words could ever flow from his lips to say how much it meant to him and his life. Everywhere he traveled he would sing the praises of El Gaucho from the highest mountain tops. Many would hear his call and venture to this magical kingdom on their own. Birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and business affairs were all celebrated. Never again would this boy be without a home. He had found his destiny and calling. For alas, he himself had become EL GAUCHO and lived happily ever after.

“Husband’s Graduation”

El Gaucho has been a part of so many memorable experiences and celebrations for my husband and I for over 20 years. It started before we were married, as a place to celebrate my husband’s graduation. I still remember that night over 20 years ago when we dined with friends. Everything was top tier from the time we walked through the door. From the service to the food, to the ambiance, every detail was thought out to create an elevated experience. We knew that we had found a special place. We then chose to celebrate many more occasions at El Gaucho though the years from anniversaries, birthdays, thank you gestures, and even our kid’s milestone birthdays. El Gaucho is our go-to place for special occasions because we know the service is consistently top notch and the food is always delicious. For that reason, El Gaucho is a treasured part of our family memories. Many places over the years have come and gone or gone downhill, but we can always trust El Gauchos with our celebrations.
